Kakuro for Beginners — A Simple Step-by-Step Guide
Kakuro (also known as Cross Sums) is a logic puzzle where numbers act like letters in a crossword. Each white “run” of cells must add up to the sum shown in the adjacent clue. You may use digits 1 to 9, and no digit can repeat inside the same run.
Kakuro appeared in mid-20th century puzzle magazines and grew into a staple for solvers who enjoy logic, structure, and a bit of number play.
1. Start with the Shortest Runs
Short runs (2 or 3 cells) have fewer combinations, so they’re easiest.
Examples:
- 3 in 2 cells → only 1+2
- 4 in 2 → 1+3
- 16 in 2 → 7+9
These give you fast footholds.

2. Use Pencil-Marks
When a cell could hold multiple digits, jot the candidates lightly.
As more runs get filled, candidates get eliminated and only one remains.
This keeps your solving clean and avoids guesswork.

3. Learn the “Magic Blocks”
Some sum+length pairs have only one possible combination.
Examples:
- 17 in 2 → 8 and 9
- 7 in 3 → 1, 2, 4
- 6 in 3 → 1, 2, 3
Even without knowing order yet, knowing the digits helps resolve crossing runs.
4. Cross-Analyze Intersections
Every white cell belongs to both a horizontal and a vertical run.
Use both constraints (sum, possible digits, pencil-marks) to eliminate possibilities.
Example:
If a vertical run can be 1+5 or 2+4, but the crossing horizontal run already uses a 5, then that vertical cell can’t be 5.

5. Avoid Guessing
Good Kakuro puzzles never require guessing.
Stick to:
- sum constraints
- non-repetition
- elimination
- intersections
This ensures a clean, logical solve every time.
